Ron Saunders was in his second year in charge at the club by the time of the 1970 – 1971 season and the canaries finished off the season in a top ten finish. They crashed out of the league cup in the third round as they suffered defeat against Bristol Rovers.
Everything came good for Norwich City during the 1971 – 1972 campaign as they were in emphatic form, dominating the second division, finishing it off as second division champions. They also enjoyed a delightful run in the league cup, reaching the quarter finals, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat against Chelsea.
The 1972 – 1973 season proved to be a mixed bag for Norwich, their first season in the top flight saw them narrowly escape relegation as they could only manage a 20th position finish, however, they enjoyed a remarkable run in the league cup, reaching the final, however suffered defeat at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
John Bond took over from the post at the start of the 1973 – 1974 season and it proved to be a debacle for Norwich City as they finished it off rock bottom, a 22nd position finish.
The 1974 – 1975 campaign heavily compensated for the previous season as the canaries enjoyed one of their finest ever seasons. They gained immediate promotion back in to the first division as they finished the campaign off in third place. They reached their second League cup final in three years, meeting Aston Villa in the 1975 final played at Wembley, however, suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Midlands club.
